Laboratory and Research Safety

Lab workers

Welcome to the EH&S Research Safety Program. At Columbia University, Laboratory and Research Safety encompasses the recognition, evaluation and control of all hazards associated with working in a laboratory, including hazards posed by the handling and use of biological, chemical and radiological materials, and the use of laboratory research equipment.

The Research Safety program of EH&S has primary responsibility for all aspects of safety in the labs. Safety in the lab environment is achieved through materials substitution, the application of engineering and administrative controls, training, the use of personal protective equipment, and a proactive and cooperative laboratory survey and training program; several of these program areas and additional useful program information are highlighted below. Please feel free to contact the Research Safety Program via labsafety@columbia.edu, with any questions, comments or concerns.
