Pandemic Planning
H1N1 Resources For Managers Dear Colleagues, New York City, the nation, and the world continue to experience a significant number of cases of swine Influenza A(H1N1). Although these cases remain predominantly mild, the World Health Organization declared official Level 6 pandemic status in June because of the wide geographic spread of H1N1. Locally, a limited number of cases of mild flu-like illness have been reported at Columbia University since the pandemic began. In response to requests from management for more guidance on managing the impact of H1N1 in the workplace, Human Resources has developed a guide in a question-and-answer format that addresses health and workplace issues. The guide includes policies and procedures regarding an employee's own illness or the illness of a family member. In addition, the guide includes information on how managers should address employee concerns about H1N1 and the workplace. The guide is included as an attachment and is intended for manager distribution only. As I mentioned in my email communication on June 12, Columbia's health experts continue to monitor the flu situation closely. There are no changes to University operations at this time; however, we continue to urge faculty and staff to minimize the potential spread of disease by staying home if ill, and through preventive hygiene efforts such as regular hand washing and covering of coughs and sneezes. For current information about the flu, prevention tips and resources, please visit the Columbia University Preparedness website: If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your HR Client Manager in the Office of Employment and HR Client Services at (212) 851-7008, or CUMC Human Resources at (212) 305-3819.
