Radiation Safety (CUMC/NYPH/NYSPI)
The Radiation Safety Program is responsible for assisting the Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC), New York Presbyterian Hospital (NYPH) and New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI) community in the safe use of ionizing radiation including radioactive materials (RAM) and x-rays. The program is designed to protect users, staff, patients, the general public and environment from exposure, and ensure the safe receipt, handling, use and storage of RAM. The mission of this program is to facilitate safe conditions for utilizing radiation and to maintain exposure As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA), and in compliance with applicable city, state and federal regulations.
The Radiation Safety Program evaluates and approves the use of RAM, approves RAM orders, and provides general surveillance for users of ionizing radiation approved by the Joint Radiation Safety Committee (JRSC).
The Radioactive Drug Research Committee reviews and approves basic research using radioactive drugs in humans without an Investigational New Drug Application (IND). It is charted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the provisions of Title 29, Code of Federal Regulation, Part 361.1.
