Fire Emergency

Fire Emergency Response

General: Fires may occur at any time of the day. The initial response to the alarm location by University personnel to determine the extent and area involved is of utmost importance to the control and extinguishment of the fire by the responding Fire Department Units.

Responsible Department: Security (305-7979), Facilities Operations (305-3753), Environmental Health and Safety (305-6780).

Regular Business Hours

Fire Alarm transmissions are reported by Lobby Security Officers to the Security Desk who notifies the Fire Safety Director and Facilities by radio to respond and take appropriate action where warranted, use extinguishers, evacuate personnel in the affected area, close doors to the fire area and apprise the Fire Department of the situation upon their arrival at the scene. The Fire Safety Director will act as liaison with the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) while keeping contact with Security and Facilities personnel via the "Talk Around" radio channel (designated channel for multiple departments to communicate on).

During Off Hours

The Security Staff and Facilities Engineer(s) on duty will follow the above procedures, with the ranking Security Officer acting as liaison with the Fire Department until arrival of the Fire Safety Director.

Multiple Alarm Fire Situations

If the fire situation results in a Multiple Alarm (Second Alarm or greater) the Chief in Charge of the fire will set up a "Fire Command Center" in the lobby of the Fire Building with a staging area for staff and equipment floors below the Fire Floor. The Fire Safety Director or the ranking Security Officer will act as liaison with the FDNY Chief in Charge at the Fire Command Center, keeping in contact with Security and Facilities personnel via "Talk Around" radio channel. Fire Plans containing building floor plans, fire protection equipment and stairwell locations must be made available to the Chief Officer. Fire Plans are located in the building Fire Alarm Panels, in Suite 66, 601 W. 168th Street, Security Office and Facilities Offices. Door keys, window opening devices and other equipment will be made available by Facilities personnel.

Notifications: In the event of a Major Fire in any Campus Building the resulting smoke and water run-off damage could cause serious problems to other floors of the building as well as the Fire Floor. The notification and mobilization of all departments affected is essential to keep damage and down time to a minimum.
